Dear parents with school aged children
You might be inclined to create a minute by minute schedule for your kids. You have high hopes of hours of learning, including online activities, science experiments, and book reports. You’ll limit technology until everything is done! But here’s the thing...
Our kids are just as scared as we are right now. Our kids not only can hear everything that is going on around them, but they feel our constant tension and anxiety. They have never experienced anything like this before. Although the idea of being off of school for weeks sounds awesome, they are probably picturing a fun time like summer break, not the reality of being trapped at home and not seeing their friends.
Over the coming weeks, you will see an increase in behavior issues with your kids. Whether it’s anxiety, or anger, or protest that they can’t do things normally - it will happen. You’ll see more meltdowns, tantrums, and oppositional behaviour in the coming weeks. This is normal and expected under these circumstances.
What kids need right now is to feel comforted and loved. To feel like it’s all going to be ok. And that might mean that you tear up your perfect schedule and love on your kids a bit more. Play outside and go on walks. Bake cookies and paint pictures. Play board games and watch movies. Do a science experiment together or find virtual field trips of the zoo. Start a book and read together as a family. Snuggle under warm blankets and do nothing.
Don’t worry about them regressing in school. Every single kid is in this boat and they all will be ok. When we are back in the classroom, we will all course correct and meet them where they are. Teachers are experts at this! Don’t pick fights with your kids because they don’t want to do math. Don’t scream at your kids for not following the schedule. Don’t mandate 2 hours of learning time if they are resisting it.
If I can leave you with one thing, it’s this: at the end of all of this, your kids’ mental health will be more important than their academic skills. And how they felt during this time will stay with them long after the memory of what they did during those weeks is long gone. So keep that in mind, every single day...

LZ1 Working From Home Ideas
Dear Parents and Caregivers of LZ1,
We have endeavoured to provide your child with access to as many resources that we use
here at school as possible. We have the advantage of being able to use an online platform
for this (email, blog and google docs). We have other suggestions that don't require the
internet as well.
We will be responding to emails, completed and shared work and questions daily and within
24hrs where possible.

Some suggestions from us…..
Intersperse 20min of work with 20min of physical activity.
Students could spend a total of around 1 ½ hours on daily school work if possible.
We understand these are unusual times and families are stretched in many directions.
What we have put together is only to support you...not add more pressure.

A general idea of what your child might do at school and the time spent on it is as follows.
Handwriting - 15 mins
Spelling - 15 mins
Writing - 30 mins
Reading - 30 mins silent chapter book reading 2x per day ( this could also be parent reading to child)
- Response to reading (Readworks & Kiwikids news are good for this,
Maths - 15 mins daily practise of Basic facts
- Number of the day (website on blog)) warm up
- 30 mins doing Maths of choice. This may be Mathletics, Khan academy,
Art - Portrait and Identity Slide Presentation - Colin McCahon research and report. (slide 7)
- follow the Sparkler Art lessons on the Home Learning tab
Activities that do not require internet
Reading a book (as many as you can!)
Read a book - write a story about it.
Singing some songs or playing instruments
Practicing of times tables - making connections between different multiples
Writing a diary of your day - making a point to notice something new or
beautiful each day - a flower or a leaf

Write thank you letters to all of those people who are helping make your day comfortable or fun
Writing stories or providing recounts of activities
Writing a research report on something of interest by reading books or recording your observations
Play card or board games with family members
The game of Yahtzee is great for basic facts

Camp Writing
Camp
Camps are fun because you get to try new things. At camp we went to Goat Island and went snorkeling, I saw fish the size of my arm! We also got to go stand up paddle boarding and I saw millions of jellyfish,we got to go down a huge water slide where I glided down at the speed of a rocket. At camp we got to do so many awesome activities but we also had to face some challenges like sleeping in a new bed, waking up at six and sleeping in general! At Marsden Bay camp the only thing we tried new was snorkeling at Goat Island but I still enjoyed it.

Camp 2020
OOps I touched a fish at goat island on the way to camp. At camp I hope the weather is good and I'm excited for the zorb balls . I am worried about snorkeling and running into any sharks or stingrays. Camp is going to be so much fun I just can't wait until i get there.
At our camp i really enjoyed the air rifles because when i hit the can it made a clink sound that made me feel really good. At the talent show I played the guitar by myself and played old town road and ti hore mai with a couple other boys. My first time snorkeling was amazing. I saw a gigantic snapper nearly the size of my body. It was so cool.
There were a couple of challenges I needed to face like waking up at 6am because I usually wake up at 7am. However I got over it by thinking about breakfast and that yummy warm porridge. Another thing I had to overcome was the air rifles because in the start I couldn't get any of the cans but when I asked for some help she told me I was closing the wrong eye and then when I closed the other eye I got all of them straight on. At camp we had these uncomfortable mattresses and how I got over that, was that I thought about my bed at home. then I fell asleep like a log.. In the end of all of it I felt happy about overcoming the challenges and in general enjoyed myself.

Camp fun
Last week the year five and sixes went on camp.
We had a great time on our way up to camp stopping in at Goat Island to do some snorkeling and visit the Leigh Marine Laboratory.
At camp we did all sorts of activities including archery.
